Alien Invasion

(model & concept for personal project)

I've been spending some time working on a procedural model of a UFO scene in Houdini 20.5, aiming to have it ready for October. This is a bit out of my usual comfort zone—I don't typically focus on vehicle modeling—so it's been an interesting challenge so far.

The idea sparked after I watched a few alien documentaries over the summer. They got me thinking about the classic themes of alien invasions and unidentified flying objects. I figured it might be a good opportunity to try something new and see where it takes me.

In terms of tools, I've been experimenting a lot with Houdini's sweep and boolean nodes. The sweep node has been particularly useful for creating the smooth, curved surfaces of the UFO. It's helped me generate the basic shapes by sweeping profiles along paths. The boolean node, on the other hand, has allowed me to cut out sections and add intricate details without too much hassle.

I'm also putting together a process video to show how I went about modeling the UFO and setting up the environment. I thought it might be helpful for anyone interested in procedural modeling or looking to get into some of Houdini's newer features. I'll share it once it's ready.

Working on this project has been a learning experience. Stepping into vehicle modeling has pushed me to think differently about how I approach modeling tasks. It's been a mix of trial and error, but I'm learning a lot along the way.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the final scene turns out. There's still a lot to do, but I'm making steady progress.

Thanks for taking the time to read about what I've been up to. I'll keep you posted as the project develops.
